Krida Legal: Providing awareness and legal assistance on anti-doping laws
Doping is a serious issue in the world of sports with many known sportspersons being banned from pursuing sports for time duration ranging from a few years to lifetime ban. The menace of drugs slowly found its way to our country as well but the bigger issue is how players are publicly humiliated and accused by media houses despite the cases pending in the trial courts. With the intent of creating awareness as well as safeguarding the under-trial sportspersons, Krida Legal a well-known legal firm is actively working towards creating an Anti doping India and creating awareness among sportspersons across the country.
The inception of a registered
society known as National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) was done with a mandate to
inhibit the usage of doping substances among sportspersons in our country. A
need for implementation of anti-doping rules in accordance with WADA code was
identified along with the classification of methods and substances administered
in different categories namely stimulants, steroids, gene doping etc. The Sports Law India and the
Anti-doping laws were closely associated to discourage the usage of drugs among
sportspersons. But the NADA while implementing the rules defined by WADA had
overlooked the following:
1. Most of
the country’s sportspersons hail from rural backgrounds. Their lack of awareness
may lead them to usage of a variety of medicines for ailments which might be
banned in other countries.
2. Most of
the sports persons often reside in training camps for several months in a year
to prepare for national and international level competitions. These training
camps are responsible for fulfilling the dietary requirements based on the
recommendation of the trainer or the coach based on the regime that a
sportsperson is following. Sometimes supplements provided to fulfill additional
needs might be classified as banned substances in another country.
It is important that while regulating the intake of drugs is a collective responsibility of the team to create an Anti-Doping India, any drug charges have consequences mostly on the sportsperson including humiliation, media trial and social boycott. This social injustice has long term implications on them.
